This year CPB celebrated National Engineer’s Week. Engineer’s Week was created to introduce Primary and Secondary school’s to the diverse world of Engineering and STEM subjects. Throughout the week our Engineering students were given an insight into a broad range of engineering fields, including electrical, structural and mechanical engineering.
The week kicked off on Monday with Mr O’Reilly’s junior Hub class diving into the world of electrical engineering, where they were able to examine, create and test a number of electrical circuits, and got to see how everyday electrical components work.
On Tuesday the focus was on Structural Engineering. The transition year class were tasked with designing and building their own model bridges, where they got to see how different bridge designs react differently under load, and how this affects the final design choice of the bridge.
Mechanical Engineering was the theme for Wednesday’s activity, where Mr. O’Reilly gave the 2nd year engineering class a demonstration on engines. Here the class got to disassemble, examine and re-assemble a 2-stroke engine, and see how to diagnose different problems and what might cause them.
On Thursday, the 6th Year and LCA Engineering classes were given a fantastic talk and demonstration on the welding and fabrication trade by former student, Stephen O’Driscoll. Stephen gave the students a comprehensive insight into getting into a trade and the benefits of doing so. Each student also got the opportunity to get a hands-on welding tutorial from Stephen, where they all contributed to creating a “CPB Engineering” sign to be hung outside the Engineering classrooms.
CPB would like to sincerely thank Stephen and O’Driscoll Iron Works for taking the time to come in to us.
