Coláiste Pobail Bheanntraí has launched its campaign to achieve the Wellread National Award. The PDST ‘Wellread National Award’ is a national initiative designed and organised by the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST). It aims to create heightened awareness about the importance of creating a CULTURE OF READING in school communities for our young people as part of their personal and academic development.

The PDST ‘Wellread National Award’ is an initiative that seeks to involve all relevant stakeholders who impact on student learning including STUDENTS, TEACHERS, ANCILLARY STAFF, PARENTS, BOARD OF MANAGEMENT AND WIDER COMMUNITY in a range of reading and associated activities.

It is envisaged that a national award will explicitly foster and nurture a reading culture in our school and will bring about an overall IMPROVEMENT IN STUDENTS’ LITERACY SKILLS IN A FUN AND ENGAGING WAY.

This academic year all first and second year students will engage with a reading programme designed in partnership with CPB Library, Bantry Library and The West Cork Literary Festival (supported by the READON project). All students will have the opportunity to read the novel SKULLDUGGERY PLEASANT by DEREK LANDY and will discuss various aspects of reading and the book with a librarian from Bantry Library. Bantry Library and the READON project will provide the books for free for all students. If any student or parent/guardian wishes to buy a copy of the book Bantry bookshop are currently offering a 20% discount.

A Chairde, thanks to all who celebrated World Book Day in CPB on Thursday 1st March 2018. Over the last 22 years, World Book Day has become firmly established as Ireland’s biggest annual event promoting the enjoyment of books and reading. The main aim is to encourage children to explore the pleasure of books and reading. Please visit www.worldbookday.com for resources and information.
