Our First Year Girls soccer team produced a terrific team performance, battling back from a goal down, to secure a vital win and move to the top of the Cork Schools League table.
After a tightly contested opening half; the girls’ 100% winning record looked to be in jeopardy when hosts, Carrigtwohill Community College, broke the deadlock midway through the second period.
The girls had to dig deep and weather a period of fierce pressure as the home side flooded forward looking to finish off the contest.
Closing space down and playing the ball quickly into channels to create space behind a very strong defensive line soon brought its reward, as a neat finish in the penalty area from Michaela O’Sullivan brought the sides level.
The away team now had plenty of encouragement and, as the game headed into the closing minutes, the ball was now almost entirely in the opposition half.
The girls’ work rate never wavered, and they were rewarded for their efforts when Michaela come up with another fantastic finish, holding off the opposition Centre Back to slide a ball past the keeper and give her side a deserved lead.
Having got to grips with the contest and now with the lead, the girls were brilliant in their organisation and communication to tighten up in the closing stages and secure an excellent win.
