On Tuesday a group of TY students went to UCC to play in a TY Wheelchair Basketball event hosted by the UCC Sports Department. This was another step in the journey of Coláiste Pobail Bheanntraí to implement inclusive sports.
For this particular group, it was their first experience of Wheelchair Basketball. And while it took a few games for all to be able to comfortably manoeuvre the chairs, by game three they were after adapting extremely well, and this became more evident by the games becoming more and more high scoring. There were many great performances on the day by Coláiste Pobail students, but one student in particular, Evin Harrington stood out, and was our top scorer on the day.
There are huge benefits to our school community as a whole by implementing inclusive sports. We can see an increase in the appreciation of and acceptance of those with disabilities, a better understanding of diversity, a greater respect for all, development of meaningful relationship and a significant increase in the access of, and inclusion within other aspects of life.
Well done to all on a wonderful event and a huge thank you to Paul Ryan of the IWA and former CPB student Maggie Coppinger for facilitating the participation of our students.
