On Thursday our Senior Ladies football team travelled to Cloughduv to play Coláiste an Chraoibhín Fermoy in the County Final. CPB started brightly with a point from Emma Kelly in the first minute. This was followed by scores from Grace Kingston, Molly Harrington and a well worked goal finished superbly by Aoidhe Murphy. Fermoy were a formidable opposition and despite great pressure from the CPB defence they had a nine point lead at half time. The girls battled hard in the second half with the whole squad playing their part to try to get back into the game. There were some more well taken scores from captain Aoife Kingston, Ciara Kelly, Emma Kelly and Ali O’Sullivan as well as a player of the match performance from goalkeeper Ella Foley. However Fermoy continued to take their scores and ran out winners on the day.
This marks the final school game for Leaving Certs Aoife Kingston, Lainey Barry and Kelly Daly who have given 6 years of great service to ladies football. They will be a huge loss and while it was not the fairytale ending they would have hoped for, they can look back on their years in a CPB jersey with great pride and know they will be sorely missed next year.
The senior county competition has been particularly poignant as it marked the return to the competitive playing field for the team since the loss of our beloved teammate Kerrie O’Connell. In a beautiful display of team spirit all panel members and coaches have worn blue ribbons with Kerrie’s name for the games. There was also a minute’s silence observed at each match in tribute to a key player on this CPB team where Kerrie’s classmates, teammates and close friends held her jersey, no 2, which has been retired for the season. Given the high emotion all players should be highly commended for their great effort in the most difficult of circumstances. Thanks to Scoil Phobail Bheara and to Colaiste an Chraoibhin for the respectful manner in which they played the games and thank you to those who came to show the girls their support.
