Coláiste Pobail Bheanntrai is applying to Fairtrade Ireland for Fairtrade schools status. As Bantry is a fairtrade town, the school felt it fitting that is should also have Fairtrade status.
Ms J. Leonard has been running coffee mornings with her CSPE classes during Fairtrade fortnight, the staff room has converted to Fairtrade tea and are currently in the process of converting to Fairtrade coffee.
The school canteen is also supporting the iniative and are selling Fairtrade bananas and hot chocolate. The School Completion Programme has been using Fairtrade chocolate in cooking club!
Fairtrade is a simple means of supporting small farmers and their communities in developing countries. With the help of the Fairtrade premium, communities have built water tanks and wells, schools and toilet blocks, as seen first hand by Cindy Kingston (who works in the school with the School Completion Programme), who visited Ghana in November. She is a member of the Clonakilty Fairtrade steering group and spoke to some first year classes about Fairtrade and about her trip.
