On Tuesday 3rd December the 1st Year members of the Coláiste Pobail Bheanntraí Young Pioneers Centre were presented with their Pioneer pins by Robert Shannon (the President of the Pioneers Association). Young Pioneers are 12 years and over. They abstain from alcoholic drinks until they are 18 years and they add a promise to keep off illicit drugs for life. Young Pioneers also take an active interest in the promotion of sobriety. Mr Shannon spoke to the students about his involvement with the Pioneers Association in Ireland, across Europe and Africa.
He welcomed the students into the Association and praised them for openly committing to abstaining from alcohol until they reach 18 years of age. He also highlighted the damaging effect that alcohol can have on the physical and mental development of teenagers
