Coláiste Pobail Bheanntraí Second Year Home Economics Students enjoy an educational excursion to Cork.
The 2nd Year Home Economics students of Coláiste Pobail Bheanntraí enjoyed a educational, culinary and consumer- studies based excursion in which they experienced some of the highlights of the Discovery Science Festival 2014 and the renowned English Market as well as some of Cork’s restaurants and shops.
The English Market provided an opportunity to sample the diversity of produce offered each day to customers and while students discovered many local delicacies and culinary delights in a treasure hunt; the fresh fruit smoothies and double chocolate Oreo cupcakes seemed far more impressive than the tripe, drisheen, crubeens, pork tails and kangaroo meat that was also on offer. Joined on the trip by teachers, Ms Horgan and Ms O’Leary; the students were treated to a tour of the market and spoke with many of the vendors about life in the market and the variety of items on sale.
Another highlight of the visit was attending the Discovery Science Festival 2014 Exhibition at Cork’s City Hall where a wide range of exhibitors endeavoured to showcase ‘The power of Science’. Students were challenged by having to demonstrate their Engineering and Mathematical skills. They took part in an Alimentary Adventure in which they got up close and personal with the digestive system in an inflatable 8m long walk-through tunnel, which mimics the human digestive system. The festival also allowed students to investigate fingerprints, test reaction speeds and use a retinal scanner to see how recognisable a face is in a crowd.
All of these attractions meant that the students were glad of the energy and nutrients they had taken on board in a visit to Luigi Malone’s for lunch as they were able to round off their excursion by applying their knowledge of consumer studies in the city centre shops before returning home.
